Beauty Review: La Roche Posay Derm AHA

Dermatologists agree that one of the most beneficial times for your skin to take advantage of a chemical peel is during a change in season.  This is because a chemical peel removes the older skin cells at the surface which allows the newer skin below to have it's time in the sun (or the rain if you're from Vancouver).  This newer skin will be better able to adapt to the changing environment---much like teenagers are better at learning how to use the new computer running Windows 7 while their parents are still adjusting to switching over to DVD from VHS (advances in technology never seem to benefit older generations!).  But with the way the weather has been fluctuating lately on the West Coast, you could spend an entire paycheck in the dermatologist's chair. The solution: do it yourself!

La Roche Posay has just launched Derm AHA, which is an intensive resurfacing serum that provides three types of chemical exfoliation throughout the skin.  So how does it work? Our skin cells are held together by intracellular glue called desmosomes, and as the skin cells move up towards the epidermis, this glue starts to weaken due to protease enzymes, and eventually the glue breaks down and cells break apart and slough off. When we were younger, the process of cell renewal took ~30 days.  But as we age, this process slows down and even when skin cells die, the glue still holds them together causing a dull complexion and enhancing fine lines.

Derm AHA works on different layers of the skin to speed up cellular renewal: (1) glycolic acid acts on the superficial layer of the skin, cutting desmosomes, (2) Activating Protease Factor works on the intermediate layer of the epidermis and stimulates enzymatic protease activity, and (3) weakens the desmosomes in the deeper layer of the epidermis. And the results are fast: a radiant, clear complexion, with visibly reduced fine lines and wrinkles.

And because it's brought to you by the brand most recommended by dermatologist's, it's non-comedogenic, fragrance and preservative free, safe for even the most sensitive skin.  Peel and reveal younger, more radiant skin today!

The ABCs of AHAs

Alpha Hydroxy Acids are often touted by dermatologists and skin gurus as being a beneficial addition to a skincare regimen, but they can also be confusing if you don't know what to look for. To help quell the mystery of AHAs, here is a guide to the basics:

What do AHAs do?

AHAs give you healthier, smoother and more radiant skin, by helping your aging skin keep up with it's cellular renewal. Why is this important? As a child, your skin creates new cells, which move up through the dermis to the surface where they die and slough of in a 28 day cycle.  But as we age, this process slows down and it takes longer for our skin to break down the intracellular glue holding the dead skin on to the epidermis.  This results in an uneven complexion, clogged pores, and dry, patchy skin (as the speed of renewal is not necessarily consistent across the face).  AHAs work on the surface of the skin to help loosen the intracellular glue and allows dead skin cells to come off.  But don't worry, this process is not painful and will not do any damage to healthy skin cells.  I've heard the process by described by a skincare traininer (Pat Clare, Neostrata - funniest.trainings.ever) who likens the process to a lint remover---it takes lint off of your clothes without ruining the actual garment.  It just takes away what isn't supposed to be there. Now if only it worked on love handles.

What kind of AHA is best?

There are a 5 naturally-occurring types of AHAs: glycolic acid, lactic acid, tartaric acid, malic acid and citric acid.  Both lactic and glycolic acid have pH levels that are closest to our skin, making them ideal.  However, glycolic acid is more beneficial as it is a smaller molecule, meaning that it can be absorbed into the skin faster and easier (less work for your skin =  advantageous, allowing your skin to focus on other acitivities such as fighting off free radicals and UV rays).

Who can use AHAs?

Almost any skin type can benefit from using AHAs, with the exception of extremely sensitive skin (think rosacea or skin intolerant to active ingredients). Someone with dry skin tend to need the extra help getting rid of the additional dead cells at the skin's surface, while oilier skins need to make sure that there is not any dead skin that might be blocking the pores and preventing the removal of oil and dirt from the skin which causes blemishes.

It's also great for people who don't have time to do a physical scrub once or twice a week---this way you get your exfoliation built right into your moisturizer!  One less thing to do in the morning means a little bit more *beauty sleep*, and potentially less dark circles under those eyes....

What should I look for in a glycolic moisturizer?

It's not enough that a cream lists glycolic acid on the list of ingredients, it must be there with the criteria.  At a minimum, your skin needs a 4% glycolic acid in order to keep up with the cellular renewal process (sloughing off dead skin and bringing newer skin to the surface). If you are a sensitive skin, dry or have never used a glycolic cream before, 4% if a good starting point. If your skin is fairly tolerant, you may be able to start with an 8% glycolic, and move on from there.  10% glycolic acid is the highest percentage that you can get over the counter, and is most beneficial for a thicker, oily skin.

Not sure what percentage is right for you? Talk to a Beauty Boutique Expert to determine which level is right for you and take home some samples to try out at home.

Rollermania!

With all of the new and exciting fragrances making their fall debut, it's hard to limit yourself to one or two scents. If you can't decide between a few, and don't have the space on your vanity or in your wallet to purchase multiple perfumes, try a fragrance rollerball!  Alternatively, if you are a fickle person, always wanting the newest fragrance and can never commit to a 50 or 100 ml bottle, this is the product for you.  They are also great to keep in your purse for travel or if you need to touch up your scent during the day. And because they are applied by pressing the rollerball onto the skin, you end up with just the right amount of fragrance without going overboard (also an ideal gift for that favourite aunt who envelopes you with her fragrance with one hug and you end up smelling like her for three days afterwards).

Sadly, not every fragrance is available in a rollerball format. Some companies offer them as individual purchases or as a bonus gift with the purchase of a full sized bottle.  And with the holiday season not far off on the horizon (!) there are a handful of rollerball gift sets available now:

Vera Wang: This set contains all three of the Princess scents - Princess, Rock Princess and Preppy Princess.  What princess wouldn't want all three? ($45)

Mariah Carey:
MC's sweet Lollipop collection, for the little girl in you....

Vera Wang and Mariah Carey trios

Marc Jacobs: MJ's most popular scents - Daisy, Daisy Eau So Fresh and Lola. ($49)

Juicy Couture: This popular set came and went last Christmas in a weekend!  Although technically these fragrances are sprays and not rollerballs, they are still rollerball-priced and sized at $45. Containing all four of the popular Juicy scents (Juicy Couture, Viva la Juicy, Couture Couture and Peace, Love and Juicy), this set has made a brief reappearance, and is sure to disappear just as quickly with only one remaining in stock!

Couture, Couture is also available separately ($22).

Find Your Perfect Foundation

Do you find yourself longing looking at photos of yourself from when you were a teenager---a flawless complexion without a care in the world, except for the fear of the odd world-ending blemish? While you may not be able to go back in time and have a redo on your high-school prom, you can achieve a the look of a flawless, evenly toned complexion using the right foundation. So how do you know what product will take you back to your teenage years? It all depends on the format, texture and coverage that you are looking for.

  • Want minimal coverage? Use a pressed powder to get rid of shine or small imperfections, or a tinted moisturizer if you want to combine a moisturizer with a foundation, and still even out skintone.  This option is ideal for someone with no major skin concerns who wants light coverage.  Keep a concealer handy for extra coverage under the eyes or for the odd blemish. Try Lancome's Bienfait Multi-Vital (same formula as the moisturizer) with an SPF 30 or Stila's Sheer Colour Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20

  • Want medium coverage? Using a light-texture liquid foundation will give good coverage without the feel of makeup, although a concealer may be required for serious breakouts.  Try Lancome's Teint Idole Fresh Wear SPF 20 or Bourjois 10-hour Sleep Effect for a barely-there feeling.

  • Want full coverage in a liquid? A liquid foundation is by far the most common, and can be found in any cosmetic line.  Depending on your skin type, you may want something oil-free (try Stila's Natural Finish Oil-Free Makeup or Lise Watier's Teint Mousse Matifiant) or something richer if you are a dry skin.  The possibilities are endless with a liquid foundation, and most often it comes down to which company has the shade best suited to your skintone.

  • Want full coverage with a light texture? Use a powder foundation.  Powder foundations are great as they give buildable coverage!  This gives you many options: if you use a brush, you get good coverage but the option of getting more coverage by going over an area a second (or third) time as the product will build upon itself; if you use a sponge you get full coverage right away.  I like to go over my face with a brush, but then use the sponge for the under-eye areas to set my concealer and get that extra coverage. And being in a compact makes them easy to carry with you for touch ups throughout the day. Try Pur Minerals 4-in-1 Foundation with SPF 15 (this award winning product is your concealer, foundation, powder and sunscreen in 1), Lancome's Dual Finish (can be used wet or dry), or Clarins Everlasting Compact Foundation for fairer skins.
  • Want your makeup to last all day and into the night?  Sometimes you don't have time to race home and redo your makeup before going out after work. Having a foundation that stays put from day to night can give you peace of mind that your makeup isn't wearing off before the first round of appetizers are gone.  Try Lise Watier's Glam 24 hours (it comes with a concealer built into the tube!) or Lancome's Teint Idole Ultra (oil-free).

  • Special concerns? Maybe you need to cover up a scar, birth mark or tattoo gone wrong---Cover FX has a wide variety of highly pigmented full-coverage foundations in either a liquid or cream texture that will do the job. While this option is a bit heavier texture, the liquid Natural FX has an SPF 15 and is a water-based oil-free formula and is sure to hide anything from hyper-pigmentation to a tattoo that is instantly regretted the next morning...

A perfect complexion provides a bare canvas for the rest of your face, and allows you to get away with minimal makeup elsewhere! Find yours in store today.

Start With Smokin' Eyes!

They say that the eyes are the window to the soul.....but we don't necessarily wanting someone having a clear view into our soul!  (at least not on a first meeting).  Solution: put up a smoke screen.  A sultry, smokey eye can add drama, draw attention to the eyes and make your eye colour stand out!

A traditional grey smokey eye always does the job, but one of the trends for this fall is a green or purple smokey eye which is great for enhancing eye colour.  Creating a smokey eye doesn't have to be difficult--and we're going to show you how! But first, a couple of disclaimers:

  1. I was already wearing some makeup before starting this tutorial--so in the pictures displayed I am already wearing eyeliner and mascara but normally it would be applied after the eyeshadow.
  2. You will also want to wait to do your face makeup until after the smokey eye is complete as it is highly likely that some of the eyeshadow will fall onto the tops of the cheeks from the eyeshadow applicator. In the photos below my face has already been made up, partly because the makeup artist has the skills to apply darker eyeshadows without any pigment falling, and partly because it was scary enough sitting in the Boutique without any makeup on my face, let alone have photographic evidence taken of my uneven skin tone!
  3. I am currently sporting long straight across bangs, but for the purpose of showing my full face I pulled them back with a headband which gave my a funny hair-halo, as well as displayed the fact that I have been lazily maintaining my eyebrows (or not) which are normally hidden behind the bangs.  After looking at the photos up close, I am now armed with tweezers to do some grooming...

Here are some simple steps to get a smokey eye:

  • To begin with, you need to start with a clean, even toned eyelid.  Make sure that the eye area has been moisturized and is free of dry skin.  Next apply a primer all over the eyelid.  We used the Lancome eye primer in Nude. (* the photo below I was already wearing my mascara and eyeliner, but normally these would be applied later).

  • Next, using an angled or rounded eyeshadow brush, take the main colour that you are going to be using for your smokey eye and apply it all over the lower lid and up into the crease.  (the colour shown below is Stila Pigalle).

  • Now using a crease brush (a fluffy, round tip), take a lighter complimentary eye shadow colour and put it in the along the edges of the darker shadow (in the crease and along the outside corner), making sure to blend it with the darker shade, and further upwards. (we used a golden eye shadow from Lancome). Be sure to get the inner part of the eye as well.

  • Next take a light coloured eye shadowed and put it right below the brow bone as a highlighter (usually a shadow that is being used as a highlighter will have some sheen).  We  used Stila's Kitten, and put it under the brow bone, but also in the inner corner of the eye and along the tops of the cheeks after the final makeup was complete.
  • Using an eyeliner brush, take the darker eyeshade (Pigalle) and line the bottom lashes with it.  Make sure to connect the colour all the way around the eye, including the inside corner.  For extra drama, we used Metamorphix by Lise Watier, which is a liquid transformer that automatically turns any eyeshadow into a waterproof eyeliner. We also used the lighter eyeshadow and lined underneath Pigalle, but that's optional.

  • Line the upper lash line with a dark eyeliner complimentary to the colour on the lower lid.  We used Stila's Stay the Day Longwear liquid liner. Apply mascara on the upper and lower lashes and your eyes are done!

  • The key to a smokey eye is to blend, blend, blend!  Also, since a smokey eye tends to be fairly dramatic, keep the rest of your face simple (it's common to use a pale or nude colour on the lips.  We used Stila's Longwear Lipcolour in Adorable).
  • As for the rest of the face, this is what was used:  Stila's One Step Correct facial primer, Pur Minerals 4-in-1 powder foundation in Light, Correct & Perfect Concealer in Tone, Glamoureyes mascara, Custom Colour blush in Coral (all by Stila), Lancaster bronzer.

Try it out today!  And if you are wanting some one-on-one lessons come on into the Beauty Boutique and we would be happy to demonstrate it for you!

Thanks Christine for a great job!

Get Lips You'll Love

Get Lips You'll Love is the theme going into the second week of 30 Days of Beauty! Your lips tend to be a focal point on your face and can take center stage if you let them.  Your lip colour can do many things: compliment your face makeup, disappear with a dramatic eye, or make a statement about your personality (a bright colour tends to exude a bold personality!). But no matter what colour you have chosen to wear, the steps are the same to get that perfect lip:

  1. Make sure that your lips are moisturized and exfoliated so that your lipstick goes on smoothly. (I really like the Clarins Extra-Firming Lip & Contour Gentle exfoliator--even though I really don't need the firming this micro-sugar exfoliator that also hydrates with essential plant oils that leave your lips super soft!)
  2. Next add a lip primer so that your lip colour lasts longer (try Lise Watier's Base Eyes & Lips).
  3. Use a lip liner to prevent the lipstick from moving into any lines around the mouth and feathering. Line around the edges of your lips, or if you want to give your lipstick even more staying power, fill in your entire lip (that way if your lipstick wears off through lunch you aren't just wearing your lip liner!). Lip liners can also help minimize or maximize your lip size.  If you have small lips, line just outside of your natural lip line.  If you have larger lips and want to minimize them,  draw the line just inside your natural lip line (make sure you swiped some foundation across your lips first, removing the natural colour from the edges.
  4. Apply lip colour using a lip brush for a more accurate application
  5. Put some gloss all over the lips for maximum shine, or just in the middle to make your lips look fuller!

Now that you know the application, all that's left is picking the colour!

Red is back as one of the hottest trends for the fall! Bright red lips make a bold statement, and it takes a strong personality to back that up.  But there are many different shades of red, and depending on whether you want the perfect daytime red for the office, or a coral or pink variation of a red, the perfect shade is out there for you!

And while I firmly believe that anyone can wear red once they have found their perfect shade, depending on the rest of your look it may distract from other features.  The nude lip has been a very popular look, and it's easy to get.  Whether you want to have a lip that blends in to the rest of your face, or is slightly darker, the key is to start with a neutral base so that the colour that you choose goes on the colour that you see.  To do that, you need to first remove the natural colour from you lip.  You can do this by either swiping your foundation brush across your lips when applying foundation, or if your lips naturally have a lot of colour, you may need something more pigmented lip concealer. Once you have found your perfect nude shade, the rest of the steps are pretty straightforward--lip liner, lipstick, and gloss.  Want your nude lips to last all day? Try Stila's Longwear Lip Colour in Adorable.  Want something extra hydrating and rich? I love Lancome's Rich Cashmere. If you want an invisible lip, after you have removed the colour from your lips, just put on a clear or nude lip gloss! (Anna Sui #700 is a great nude gloss)

Finding your perfect colour can be a little daunting--there are literally hundreds of colours to look at, that's why we are here!  Come into the Beauty Boutique and let us know what colour you are looking for or what look you are trying to achieve and we can help  you find it.  It will save you the time from going through all the brands and shades, and sometimes the colour that you are looking for may not jump  out at you.  So come in and find your perfect lips today!

Stila Fall Collection

Fall in love with the Stila Fall 2011 colour collection---just arrived in store!

What's that you say? It's only August? Thankfully the new colours are like a continuation of summer--warm, fun and playful.  A perfect example is the Living the Laguna Life palette. This travel ready set contains 4 eye shadows, a blush and a highlighter--everything you need for a day at the beach! And this cute little set is a steal at $18 (a $62 value).

Another great deal is the Lip Gloss trios; these lip glosses are the perfect combination of colour and shine, and not the least bit sticky!  Choose your set with either warm or cool colours, with each set containing two new colours and a best seller!

The piece-de-resistance for the fall collection is definitely the In the Light eyeshadow palette.  This stunning palette contains 10 highly-pigmented eye shadows, in colours ranging from a light golden to a rich bronze.  This palette contains all of the colours needed to transform your look from naturally gorgeous at the office, to a dramatic sultry evening pop.  And all of the colours are neutral so they are flattering for every skin tone.  As a bonus, this kit contains a bonus Stay All Day waterproof eyeliner in Damsel, which is a matte chocolate brown.  At $50, this limited edition palette is sure to sell out!

Another new addition is a new shade of the popular custom colour blush in a soft coral!  For anyone not familiar with this product, the highly-rated custom colour blush comes in it's original pink colour and now the coral, and works with all skin tones by adjusting to each individual's colouring.

There are also more staples added to their Stay All Day line; Stay All Day liquid liner is now available in green and grey (FYI - this stays the day and then some if you don't have a good makeup remover! I wear it every day without smudge or smear), as well as more colours in the Stay All Day waterproof eye liner.   Also new is a Stay All Day waterproof eyebrow pencil, which is available in two shades. These pencils go on soft and smooth, and are twist up so there's no need to sharpen.

Other new products include the Perfecting Concealer, available in 5 shades, and the Perfect and Correct Foundation.  I tried both of these products and really like both the texture and finish--they went on really smooth and rich, leaving a flawless complexion without the feel of makeup!

When the products are this hot, summer is sure to stick around for a while! But the limited edition colours and sets will not, so hurry in to get yours today!
